Do you ever get the feeling that there is something out there that can “get you?” Sometimes people fear accidents, disease, dangerous people, or financial and physical disasters. It seems like these might just sneak up on you and get you. A comforting thought about this from the Bible says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Begotten is old fashioned language referring to conception and birth. But it literally means, “to get or obtain by effort.” God has but one begotten Son, which we often refer to as Christ.
Christ, the perfect example of sonship, was the message that Jesus brought to the world through the example of his own life. And this was not just for himself, but so that each of us could live our lives on earth through the same Christ. When I read about Christ, I think of God saying to us, “You are my begotten too. I have got you. You are mine.” Divine Love has got each of us already and always, and there is nothing else that can get us because God got there first.
John wrote, ”Beloved, let us [unselfishly] love and seek the best for one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves [others] is born of God and knows God [through personal experience].The one who does not love has not become acquainted with God, for God is love. [He is the originator of love, and it is an enduring attribute of His nature.] By this the love of God was displayed in us, in that God has sent His [One and] only begotten Son [the One who is truly unique, the only One of His kind] into the world so that we might live through Him….Beloved, if God so loved us [in this incredible way], we also ought to love one another.”**
So, when danger threatens to get you, remember that God already has you. You belong to God. God has everyone around you too. And a bonus about being gotten by God is that you are also understood, as in “I get you, man.” Understanding is a primary element of love. God gets us and God has us. Therefore nothing else can get us. We’re safe and we’re understood. And when we feel understood, its natural to share this understanding love with others.
When we feel threatened, we can remember that we belong to divine Love, that God has got us. This is how we make the Word of God practical in our lives, the Word is made flesh, so to speak. We feel the grace of God cherishing His only begotten one, and this Christ is living in us.
Every day we can remember that God has made us anew and has got us in the palm of His hand. It’s like God is saying, “Don’t worry. I’ve got your back. And your front. I have your up and down and all around.” You are safe, so go out and have an adventure today.
