“God doesn’t need me. God doesn’t need anything.” I hear this from time to time.
And the Bible does say this, “God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;”Acts 17:24, 25
So it is true, in one sense. God never needs anything, if need implies that God lacks something. But if need implies a requirement that must be fulfilled, then God needs a lot—and of course, what God needs, God gets.
Here are some of the things the Bible says that God needs.
God is Creator. Therefore God needs to create. Creation was perhaps not just a one-time thing for God. The divine creativity shows up moment by moment in seasons, relationships, weather, day and night, art, growth, and much more. And in you and your life every day.
God is Father/Mother. So God needs children. The Bible says the motherliness of God comforts and the fatherliness of God provides for and upholds creation. And here you are again, as a child of the best of Parents.
God is light. So God needs to shine and reflect. And yes, that’s you again as the very reflection itself. You are both the object and subject of God’s light. Physicists say that the forces that make up matter are actually photons–bursts of light. Physical light can be represented as either a particle or a wave. And we could say that God’s light is expressed in both form and function. Spiritual light shines in intention, observation, understanding, and action, which all play a part in God’s expression of light. When you say, “I see!” you are recognizing and witnessing to the light of God.
God is Love. So God needs to love. God needs Her/His love to be expressed and received. God’s love is always a circle. You exist to receive and reflect love back to God and creation. And you manifest God’s loving nature in compassion, generosity, kindness, and affection to others.
God is Teacher and an infinite source of knowledge. As teacher, God needs students to learn, discover, investigate and understand the infinite depth and breadth and height of all of His wonders. That learner is you.
God is infinite individuality. God needs to be differentiated into forms and individualities. Each creature, including you, represents some unique expression of God’s unlimited individuality. God’s infinite facets together constitute His allness.
God is harmony. Harmony consists of parts working together to create a pleasing whole. So God needs all parts of His creation to cooperate in expressing beauty, art, teamwork and systems. Harmony is never static, but always changing. Thus God is forever moving you about into new relationships and activities, each bringing out fresh harmonies, and enhancing your individuality. God needs movement and change in order to be continually harmonious, though as an infinite whole, He is unchanging in quality and quantity.
God is Principle. So God needs to cause, enforce, and interpret Himself through divine laws. These laws sustain and operate the earth and the whole universe, which includes you.
God is the Great Giver. So God needs to pour out all that He is, including joy, hope, goodness, delight, approval, grace, peace, wisdom, love. And yes, it’s a tough job, but someone has to be there to accept all of this. That’s you.
So you see, God needs you. You fulfill God’s expression of Himself. You are a necessary part of the wholeness of God. What else does God need? Leave your ideas in the comments section.

My Christian Science teacher,
Merle Witham Miller, CSB, from South Bend, Indiana, suggested that we tell our Sunday School students that the Church
needs you. (rather than saying, “you need church”).
I also began to make progress in all of my ventures as soon as I finally realized one day, that God needed me.
