When you promise something, you open up possibilities.

When you commit with the firm intent to keep your promise, you set things in motion. You open doors of opportunity; you bring resources and help to your side that are beyond chance and personal control.

You also close the door to other possibilities. This helps you to focus all your energies on the course that you have chosen, rather than leaking your power in every direction. And it precludes all kinds of dire consequences.

SEEING AND BELIEVING (OR NOT)

When a kitten sees itself in a mirror, it thinks it sees another kitten and reacts, in sometimes hilarious ways. Kids of all ages love seeing themselves in mirrors. When we video-call our grandchildren, they visit for a few minutes with us, but before long they are drawn to the little video of themselves in the corner, and pretty soon they are interacting with it, instead of with us, making faces at themselves and giggling.

This illustrates what a wise philosopher once said, “We do not see things as they are. We see things as we are.”

RENEWAL AND TRANSFORMATION

“Be not conformed to this world: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Images and events from the world are constantly paraded before us, claiming our attention and response. If we conform our view of reality to everything we see among these images, we would most likely be terrified and dismayed. Instead of blandly following the world’s lead, we can bravely challenge whatever is

In our individualistic society, we sometimes forget this simple fact— for some things, we need other people.
